1.General Program Description: The PA Fellowship program is a 12 month rotational program throughout the adult and pediatric emergency departments as well as multiple off-service rotations. They spend time training with a multitude of departments including SICU, CCU, Anesthesia, Ultrasound, Ophthalmology, EMS, Toxicology, and others. There is a combination of both clinical and didactic work throughout their time at Albany Medical Center.
2.Rationale For Program: The program is intended to provide training to new graduates and those looking for a career change into Emergency Medicine. Given its steep learning curve and specialized care, Emergency Medicine is a difficult specialty to work in without additional training. We believe that this program provides necessary training to improve the competency of our providers to further their careers and provide better care to their patients.
3.Desired Outcomes: Upon completion of the program, we expect that our Fellows will have the knowledge and skills necessary to become a successful practitioner of emergency medicine in any clinical setting from academic centers to critical access centers.
4.Critical Success Factors: In order for this program to be successful, Fellows must gain appropriate exposure to the various acuity levels and subspecialty care centers. This gives them a well-rounded knowledge base and propels them towards competent and independent practice. Progress is tracked throughout their time within the Fellowship through a multitude of avenues including preceptor evaluations, personalized real-time feedback on shifts, shadow shifts/ mentorships, ROSH Review educational and didactic material and tests, ongoing didactic education, Simulation center scenarios and many more.
