Job Description

To plan, implement and evaluate the provision of high-quality medical care, with appropriate resource management, to children and adolescents in the respective clinical area.

The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for the position of Aflac Hematology Clinician. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research. The Hematology Program is an integral component of the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, and currently includes 32 faculty members, 17 of whom are primarily basic research-focused as well as 15 advance practice providers. Of the total number, 14 faculty members and 9 advance practice providers are dedicated to the SCD team. Candidates will have a strong record of demonstrated clinical expertise caring for pediatric SCD patients. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has close affiliations with research investigators within the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a willingness to collaborate across departmental or center boundaries is essential.

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country.

• In 2021, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 6 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report.
• More than 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
• The Aflac pediatric hematology program is largest in the country (including >2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders).
• We are home to the largest pediatric Sickle Cell program in the country conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to Sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies.
• Our Hemostasis and Thrombosis program is one of the premier programs in the nation consisting of a large clinical program and a diverse research program.
• The Aflac Blood and Marrow Transplantation program performs 80 transplants each year, and is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.
• The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 115 faculty and 35 Advance Practice Providers (APPs), conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders.
• In 2020, Aflac faculty generated $21.5M in extramural funding, including more than $12.3M from the NIH.
• The Aflac fellowship program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology.
• The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies.

This position will devote the majority of effort to inpatient clinical responsibilities in the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

• Provide exemplary clinical service and assure that patients cared for by you receive only the highest quality care.
• Devote 70-90% to inpatient clinical responsibilities, with the remaining effort, depending upon research interests and funding, divided among the Aflac Clinics and outpatient facilities at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
• In collaboration with program leaders, contribute to and expand the clinical program and patient services in sickle cell disease and general hematology.
• Based on experience and interests, there may be opportunities for research and educational roles.
• Play a role in the education and training program of the pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT Division.

We anticipate this time may include both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, including call and will be adjusted depending on service needs.

Successful candidates will have:

• MD, MD/PhD, or DO degrees.
• Must be Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.
• Must be currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Georgia.
• A history of clinical excellence/achievement.
• A strong history of mentorship of trainees and junior faculty to support growth in research and scholarship.

Salary and faculty rank at Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The primary focus of this position will be an emphasis on clinical service and administrative duties.

Employment will be in the Emory + Children's Pediatric Institute. The Pediatric Institute combines the unique strengths and resources of each institution in support of our three-part academic missions of providing outstanding clinical care, conducting innovative basic science discovery and clinical research, and coordinating exceptional education of the future healthcare workforce.

Experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the respective clinical area.

Education

• Graduate of an accredited, four-year medical school.
• Graduate of an accredited, post-graduate residency program in Pediatrics.
• Completion of an accredited fellowship program in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Certification Summary

• Board Certified/ Board Eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
• Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Georgia.
• BLS or PALS certification required.
• Current DEA registration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and families and as a team member.
• Meets eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of the Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta Professional Staff.
• Demonstrates the following skills: personal organization and time management, human relations and teamwork, personal adaptability, personal motivation, and listening.

Job Responsibilities

• Provides patient care within the respective clinical area which complies with the Professional Staff Bylaws, rules and regulations and Childrens policies and procedures.
• Participates in and incorporates Quality Improvement and research findings into practice.
• Provides and/or serves as a resource for patient/family and staff education.
• Educate and assist trainees with medical decision making.
• Provides an authenticated report of all physician services rendered and maintains accurate and complete records in an acceptable manner.
• Completes necessary documentation and ensures timely communication to facilitate patient care and appropriate reimbursement.
• Actively responds to patient and clinical staff questions and requests.
• Participates in meetings/activities as required to support operations of the clinical area.
• Participates in activities that enhance professional development, complete, and maintain certification in BLS, PALS, or NALS and maintains any additional specialty training/certifications as required by the area assigned.
• Performs other responsibilities as required.
